Abstract
Purpose: Unexpected antibody screening and identification test should be performed before transfusion for preventing hemolytic transfusion reaction. The purpose of this study was to analyze the frequency and clinical characteristics of unexpected antibodies found in transfusion candidates at Chungbuk National University Hospital for last 2 years (2011-2012). Material and Methods: We analyzed the results form 234,264 antibody screening test and 115 antibody identification test using DiaMed-ID system (DiaMed, Murten, Switzerland). Results: Of the 234,264 patients, 115 (0.45%) showed positive results for antibody screening test. Unexpected antibodies were identified in 73 (0.3%) patients. Autoantibodies were detected in 26 (0.11%) patients and the type of antibodes were not identified in 11 (0.16%) patients. Of the 115 patients, 87 (79.1%) patients had no history of transfusion in our hospital. The antibodies that were detected most frequently were anti-E (32.7%) followed by anti-E +anti-c (6.4%), anti-M (6.4%), anti-Lea (4.5%), anti-D (2.7%), anti-e (2.7%), ant-C (2.7%), anti-c (2.7%), anti-Jka (2.7%) and anti-Fyb (2.7%). Conclusion: The frequency and clinical characteristics of unexpected antibodies at our hospital are no different than those obtained in other Korean studies. This study may provide data for unexpected antibodies in department of blood bank at Chungbuk National University Hospital.
